The city inside the living room

Project description

The city inside the living room is a look inside some intimate public spaces, where the interior becomes exterior and the urban noise contains many rural inflexions. The images were captured in Kathmandu and Pokhara, the two biggest cities in Nepal, Asia, at the beginning of 2022. Although the notion of intimacy appears to be foreign — partly because of the high population density as Kathmandu has over 17.000 people/sqm — people seem to be very comfortable inside their living environment as the public space becomes a sort of natural extension of their personal housing. This also transforms a simple walk into an incursion into the day-to-day life of the locals, starting from the children's playroom, through the kitchen and into the bedroom and bathroom. Also, being such an important religious centre, represented mainly by Hinduism and Buddhism, you can find a lot of symbolic illustrations and ornaments on the majority of the outside walls, placed with the care of an emotionally involved interior decorator. This series tries to capture some singular stories, tangent to the surrounding bustle, where interior balance comes also from how you perceive your surroundings and the liberal interpretation of the destination of public spaces that are available in a city that becomes truly alive.
