Project description
A public space without the user. One may not be itself present in these photographs but his belongings indicate how this particular type of public space it is used. We perceive public space mainly as a common ground for diverse activities, recreational purposes and social interactions, as for homeless people it also has to provide and simulate the privacy we have from our homes. As a counter effect, some cities saw the use of strategies that imply elements defined as hostile architecture as a means to stop and prevent a public space from being transformed in a shelter or a temporary camp for homeless persons. But what would public space look like if everything was built or made “homeless-proof”? I don’t think this represents an optimal solution in the long term, rather it will emphasize the existing taboo regarding homelessness.
